Overview

The Maintenance Technician performs troubleshooting, repairs and preventative maintenance on all electrical, mechanical and hydraulic equipment utilized both underground and surface.  Maintenance Technicians will regularly examine equipment to ensure that it is operating appropriately and in compliance with MSHA policies / requirements.  This position must become knowledgeable in all aspects of mine operations and learn the location and function of equipment operating at the mine.  Maintenance Technicians work rotating shifts so schedules vary to cover all hours of mine operation which may include overtime, holidays and weekends.  Maintenance Technicians may be subject to call-ins to assist with maintenance issues that may, or have, impact plant performance.  Prairie State Generating Company believes to be successful we must first and foremost work safe, follow job plans and Standard Work Procedures (SWP’s) when performing tasks or operating equipment.

Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

 

  • Troubleshoot, repair and maintain equipment utilized both underground and surface at the mine location including but not limited to:
    • Continuous miners.
    • Haulage and Materials Handling Equipment – Ram cars, and conveyors.
    • Roof Bolters.
    • Scoops.
    • Feeders.
    • Ventilation equipment.
    • Power distribution equipment.
    • Personnel carriers.
  • Diagnose failures of all mining and support equipment utilizing parts and service manuals including hydraulic and electrical schematics.
  • Trains lesser qualified employees in performing preventive maintenance and routine equipment service and repair activities.
  • As needed, assist in developing maintenance procedures for site equipment repairs / inspections to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Utilize available resources such as Standard Work Procedures SWP’s, job plans, service manuals or other written reference materials to ensure safe and efficient work practices.
  • Perform scheduled preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance as required.
  • Complete all required paperwork in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Meet established and communicated expectations set forth by mine management.
  • Adhere to and support all PSGC Safety, Environmental, Site and Departmental procedures.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned, including non-core responsibilities as directed within the individuals skills and qualifications.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

 

  • High School or GED diploma required.
  • Minimum 1.5-years’ experience in Operations or Maintenance in a mining industry desired / preferred

and / or

  • Minimum 3-years’ experience working in a heavy equipment re-build shop desired / preferred.

 

Certification/Licensure

 

  • Valid MSHA electrical card preferred.
  • Welding and cutting certifications / training desired / preferred.

 

Knowledge of

 

  • Hydraulic, electrical and mechanical maintenance principles / practices relating to mining equipment.
  • Basic cutting and welding skills.
  • Proper use of hand tools and power tools.
  • State and federal laws and regulations governing the mining of coal.
  • Safety and health hazards associated with the mining of coal.

 

Skills, abilities and physical requirements

 

  • Ability to work and operate equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to clearly communicate with co-workers, supervisors and others.
  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Ability to work any assigned shift, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to work overtime as required.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision as required.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Stand for 5 to 10 hours on uneven rocky surfaces.
    • Be seated for up to 10 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
    • Walk for up to four hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
    • Lift up to 80 pounds without mechanical assistance.
    • Work from elevated positions, walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off of equipment and must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift as a result of the mine height.
    • Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.

Compensation and Benefits

 

At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is between $ 29.00 per hour and $46.28 per hour. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. In addition, this position is eligible to participate in the Company’s monthly incentive program.

Prairie State offers all full-time employees paid time off, accruing 160 hours annually with gradual increases based on length of service, as well as nine paid holidays per year. Paid maternal and paternal leave is also available to employees that meet the eligibility requirements.
