The Mine Maintenance Manager will direct the maintenance department in day-to-day activities and comply with established policies, procedures, laws and regulatory requirements. This position will provide leadership, management and administrative oversight for all assigned mine maintenance personnel including, but not be limited to, scheduling, training, motivation, coaching and counseling as required. The Mine Maintenance Manager will be accountable for supervision, planning and preparation, quality assurance, duration, cost and completion of all work assigned to the mine maintenance department.

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

• Direct the maintenance department in day-to-day activities and comply with established policies, procedures, laws and regulatory requirements.
• Set the highest standard for safety, accepting nothing less than zero accidents.
• Provide leadership and direction for the shift maintenance crew leaders.
• Oversee and develop the technical skills of the technician work force.
• Ensure all work planning, execution and documentation processes are followed.
• Ensure all scheduled PM procedures are properly executed and conducted as scheduled.
• Lead mine equipment or process related Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) and/or Failure Modes Effects Analysis (FMEA) processes to ensure corrective actions, repairs and modifications are appropriate and timely in their execution.
• Provide oversight and project management, preparation and schedule compliance of all mine equipment or process related outages, by assuring contract work scopes are complete, internal resources are assigned, budgets are prepared and contractor oversight is provided for the maintenance work to be performed.
• Work and train mine maintenance personnel in the most reliable, safe and efficient methods of equipment and system maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Provide technical expertise, leadership and assistance for ancillary improvement projects as assigned.
• Review specifications for all mine equipment.
• Develop and implement rebuild schedule for underground mining equipment.
• Set up interfaces with all mine machinery, conveyors, etc.
• Develop training plan for all maintenance personnel.
• Develop mine maintenance plans (including downtime scheduling for overhauls).
• Develop work schedules for maintenance crews.
• Maintain reports and records as required by company and regulatory agencies.
• Propose and define projects related to achieving company goals and objectives.
• Establish goals and objectives for the maintenance group that are consistent with the overall organizational goals.
• Participation in screening and selecting team members who are predisposed to succeed in a underground work environment.
• Possess the ability to identify the need for change, then establish and prioritize changes that will benefit the overall performance within the maintenance department.
• Develop an atmosphere of joint cooperation and respect between all departments.
• Must have regular and reliable attendance.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• This position reports to the General Manager of the Mine and supervises nine (9) direct reports.

Education/Experience

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering (or equivalent) is preferred.
• Must have 15 years’ experience managing maintenance activities at an underground mining operation.
• Must have current MSHA electrical certification. (High, medium and low voltage, underground)
• Must be knowledgeable of State and Federal mining regulations pertaining to underground mining including electrical permissibility.
• State Mine Foreman Certification or equivalent papers from another state preferred.

Certification/Licensure

• MSHA electrical certification.

Knowledge of

• Thorough knowledge of all underground mining practices, equipment and procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations governing the mining of coal.
• Knowledge and ability to make decisions relative to production, maintenance, law and safety.
• Knowledge and experience with CMMS systems.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 products including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word applications.

Skills, abilities and physical requirements

• Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to coordinate with all levels of management.
• Ability to promote a safe work environment and ensure compliance with all safety programs and policies.
• Ability to set priorities for subordinates on all three shifts at different work locations and to follow-up to ensure priorities have been met.
• Must be willing to work any assigned shift, overtime, weekends and holidays.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Strong sense of closure… “complete what you start”.
• Ability to read and understand mine plans.
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Physical Requirements:
  • Stand for 6 to 10 hours on uneven, rocky surfaces
  • Walk for up to 8 hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
  • Lift up to 70 pounds without mechanical assistance. Work from elevated positions, walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off equipment and must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift as a result of the mine height.
  • Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.

• Exposed to industrial safety hazards occasionally.
• Routine business travel.

Compensation and Benefits

At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is between $127,000 to $150,000. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. In addition, this position is eligible to participate in the Company’s monthly incentive program.
