Summary

Develop relationships, promote teamwork, mentor and coach, provide vision, and inspire the mining organization to its highest level of performance.  Actively promote safety and compliance while delivering a quality and timely product to the plant.  Develop and implement a strategic mine plan for successful organizational results.  Overall responsibility for the safety, compliance, production, engineering and other production related activities of the mine.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

• Supporting the General Manager; develops the overall safety, mining and plans for the mine.
• Maintains open and continuous dialogue with Power Plant and Maintenance Manager to assure that all plant fuel production and quality needs are being met.
• Develops and manages mining operation’s budget including zero based budgeting assumptions and variance analysis as needed.
• Establishes manpower needs and ensures proper number of employees for the mine to operate safely and efficiently. 
• Works closely with Engineering to develop production assumptions to meet tonnage requirements in respect to quality and quantity.
• Ensure compliance with PSGC’s MSHA approved roof and ventilation control plans.
• Monitors and controls costs of production labor, overtime, materials and supplies.

• Regular inspections of the mine to observe safety performance and production practices.
• Provides step-up leadership as required.
• Establishes standards for the mine and assures compliance to standards.
• Monitors mine examiner’s books on daily basis or assigns a designee and monitors.
• Promotes and encourages teamwork among subordinates and promotes the skills and leadership development of all team members.

Qualification Requirements

Education/Experience

• Engineering degree in related field or equivalent experience preferred.
• 7-10 years of increasing managerial responsibility.
• Extensive background managing a large workforce effectively and efficiently in an underground coal mine environment.

Certification/Licensure

• State Mine Manager Certification required.
• EMT certification is a plus.

Knowledge of

• Knowledgeable in contemporary underground coal mining practices including safety, production, ventilation, belt haulage, roof control, and drainage.
• All state and federal laws and regulations governing the mining of coal.
• Safety and health hazards associated with the mining of coal.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and general computer applications.

Skills, abilities and physical requirements

• Skilled in decision making relative to production, maintenance, mine law, mine safety and environmental/regulatory compliance.
• Excellent communications skills with all levels of the organization.

• Ability to read and understand mine plans.
• Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
• Physical Requirements:
• Stand for 6 to 10 hours on uneven rocky surfaces
• Walk for up to 8 hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
• Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.

Compensation and Benefits

At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is between $ 151,000 per year salary exempt and $178,000.00 per year salary exempt.
