Overview

Summary

 

The Compliance/Safety Technician is responsible for assuring that PSGC complies with all applicable compliance standards and that all mine safety policies and procedures are being followed.  The Compliance/Safety technician interfaces with mine safety inspectors and prepares and files necessary reports. The Compliance/Safety technician is responsible for making safety observations and conducting all respirable dust samples.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

  • Conduct all respirable dust samples.
  • Serves as primary interface with MSHA and State inspectors.
  • Prepares reports and maintains files on compliance/safety issues related to equipment and systems.
  • Maintains presence at crew meetings and pre-shift briefings.
  • Conduct mine inspections, checking for safe work practices and compliance issues.
  • Conduct training with visitors and new hires.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required

 

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Participates in regular safety meetings.
  • Conduct safety meetings with crew.
  • Assists in other compliance and safety responsibilities.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisor responsibilities. 

Will provide authority of knowledge to Crew leaders and Shift Managers

 

 

Qualification Requirements

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred; high school diploma required.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, specifically in an underground mining environment.
  • Minimum underground working experience – 4 years
  • Underground Supervisor Experience - preferred

 

Certification/licensure

Must have valid Illinois State Driver’s License

Must have Illinois Examiner’s Certificate

Must be certified in MSHA dust sampling, maintenance, and calibration.

MSHA certified trainer a plus

Emergency Medical Training is preferred.

 

Knowledge of

  • All safety standards applicable to both above ground and underground mining and mining related equipment.
  • Industrial Hygiene standards applicable to a mining environment.
  • Microsoft Office Suite

 

Skills, abilities and physical requirements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to coordinate with all levels of management.
  • Ability to think proactively.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and understand mine plans.
  • Ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Ability to work unsupervised as required.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Stand for 6-10 hours on uneven, rocky surfaces.
    • Walk for up to 8 hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
    • Lift up to 70 pounds without mechanical assistance. Work from elevated positions, walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off equipment and must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift as a result of the mine height.
    • Ability to perform overhead work.
    • Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.

  • Will work in damp, dimly lit and confined work areas and will be subjected to extremes of ambient temperature.
  • Will encounter noise levels that will necessitate the wearing of hearing protection.

Compensation and Benefits

 

At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is  $41.79 per hour. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. In addition, this position is eligible to participate in the Company’s monthly incentive program.

Prairie State offers all full-time employees paid time off, accruing 160 hours annually with gradual increases based on length of service, as well as nine paid holidays per year. Paid maternal and paternal leave is also available to employees that meet the eligibility requirements.
