Overview

This position will support continuous improvement at the mine and throughout the organization.  They will work with the Safety Manager to promote behavior-based safety and a healthy working environment for all employees, subcontractors, vendors, and visitors. Evaluate and improve upon current safety efforts while establishing a unified safety program and culture.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Work with mine personnel to provide a safety conscious culture. Specifically, be a key entity in the rollout of CORESafety initiatives/safety practices in the workplace.
  • Review and initiate Risk Management, Safe Work Procedures and Job Hazard Analysis.
  • Act as a liaison, support and where applicable actively participate in the activities of the emergency services teams’ at PSGC.
  • Conduct and make recommendations based on Behavioral Based Analysis. Identify and utilize appropriate tools to uphold a strong safety culture at Prairie State.
  • In conjunction with other departments, ensure all safety requirements associated with the law and the jobsite rules and procedures are being adhered to.
  • Promptly notifying the Safety Manager of all accidents and near misses or other violations of the safety requirements. Participate in Root Cause Analysis.
  • Assisting in routine safety audits and reporting the findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Assisting in the preparation and review of any documents or reports as requested.
  • Contributes to the health and safety of the PSGC employees by assisting the Safety Manager in the development and implementation of effective health and safety initiatives.
  • Responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures to achieve zero injuries and maintain full compliance with regulatory requirements in the health and safety (i.e. MSHA, housekeeping, etc.).
  • Prevents initial personal injury and accidents by coordinating and assisting in thorough accident investigations and provides management with specific recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Liaison between the employee safety committee and management.
  • Assist in emergency preparedness plans, implementation, training, and drills.
  • Ensure that proper personal protective equipment is available and utilized by all employees.
  • Promote safety and health awareness through internal company health and safety newsletters and memoranda.
  • Educate and train employees and contractors on MSHA required health and safety programs, Prairie State culture initiatives and all other safety programs and preventative safety awareness programs.
  • Lead OJT (on-site job training) for inexperienced miners, and cross-training within mine operations department.

Education/Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience working in or supporting a coal mine environment.
  • Knowledge and experience working in a Behavior Based Safety system is required.
  • Leadership/Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Associate/Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Health (or related field) or Technical degree preferred

  

Certification/Licensure

  • Illinois Mine Examiner Certification required
  • Illinois EMT license preferred
  • CMSP (Certified Mine Safety Professional) preferred

 

Knowledge of

 

  • Knowledge of safety and health procedures, first aid methods, coal mining principles and known hazards.
  • Knowledge of state and federal health and safety laws associated with the mining industry required. (MSHA Part 75 & 77)
  • Knowledge of company policies and standards.
  • Knowledge of MSHA reporting requirements.

  • This job will require time spent both on surface and underground.
  • Will work in damp, dimly lit and confined work areas and will be subjected to extremes of ambient temperature.
  • Will encounter noise levels that will necessitate the wearing of hearing protection.
  • Exposed to industrial safety hazards.

Compensation and Benefits

 

At Prairie State, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as one grows and develops within a role. The base pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this role is between $85,000 anually and $110,000 anually. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as skills, qualifications, and relevant experience. In addition, this position is eligible to participate in the Company’s monthly incentive program.

Prairie State offers all full-time employees paid time off, accruing 160 hours annually with gradual increases based on length of service, as well as nine paid holidays per year. Paid maternal and paternal leave is also available to employees that meet the eligibility requirements.
