Overview

The Assistant Shift Manager contributes to the mine’s safety and productivity by working with the Shift Manager to manage underground mine activities on an assigned shift, ensuring the mine operates safely and at maximum efficiency.

Responsibilities

Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, any one of the following assigned areas:

 

  • Assists the shift manager as needed in coordinating, assigning, and monitoring the shift’s mining activity to ensure that production requirements are met in the safest, most efficient manner.
  • Reviews with the Shift Manager and other members of management the general mining plan for the day and evaluates shift personnel relative to performing the needed work to meet daily objectives.
  • Assists the shift manager as needed to determine manpower need for the shift and directs qualified assignments of replacements to ensure qualified employees from the work force are properly assigned.
  • Conducts routine inspections of the mine to observe production practices relative to quality, quantity and safety.
  • Reviews and countersigns the books prior to the shift and at the end of the shift to ensure they are properly filled out.
  • Provides oversight of the assigned shift in the absence of the Shift Manager.
  • May be required to run a coal loading section or supervise activities of an idle section in the absence of Section Supervisors.

 

Other Duties/Responsibilities

 

  • Assists in conducting safety meetings with crew leaders.
  • Conducts Pre-shift meetings with employees
  • Encourages teamwork among subordinates, develops skill level of employees.
  • Ensures compliance with State and Federal mine laws, as well as company policy and procedure.
  • Promotes labor stability.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

Supervise and motivate employees assigned to his/her designated shift.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

 

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; high school diploma required.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, specifically in an underground mining environment.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ Section Supervisor experience or five (5) years’ documented experience in a leadership or lead role.

 

Certification/Licensure

 

  • Mine Manager’s Papers required.
  • Mine Examiner’s Papers required.
  • Must have valid Illinois State Driver’s License.
  • If candidate does not currently possess General Surface Supervisor papers, must be obtained at the first opportunity after being awarded the position.
  • Emergency Medical Training is preferred.

 

Knowledge of

 

  • Thorough knowledge of all underground mining practices, equipment and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of all state and federal laws and regulations governing the mining of coal.
  • Knowledge and ability to make decisions relative to production, maintenance, law and safety.

 

Skills, abilities and physical requirements

 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to coordinate with all levels of management.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong sense of closure; complete what you start”.
  • Ability to read and understand mine plans.
  • Ability to read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Stand for 6 to 10 hours on uneven rocky surfaces
    • Walk for up to 8 hours at a time in uneven and wet conditions through sections of the mine with varying degrees of clearance and headroom.
    • Ability to do overhead work.
    • Lift up to 70 pounds without mechanical assistance. Work from elevated positions, walk or climb up and down stairways and ladders and climb on and off of equipment and must be able to bend or stoop for a full shift as a result of the mine height.
    • Don and wear required safety equipment including SCSR, respirators, hearing and eye protection, and protective clothing.

  • Will work in damp, dimly lit and confined work areas and will be subjected to extremes of ambient temperature.
  • Will encounter noise levels that will necessitate the wearing of hearing protection.
